Lamar County Railroad Town

Apartments in Milner, GA

Welcome to Milner, a small Lamar County city founded in 1842 as a railroad town on Georgia's Middle Georgia uplands.

Milner is a small city in Lamar County, Georgia, in the gently rolling uplands of the state's west-central Piedmont, south of Atlanta. Its population was 772 at the 2020 census. The community was founded in 1842 and incorporated in 1970, but its origins reach back to the railroad era that shaped so many of the region's towns; it was established as a railroad town and named for Willis Milner, an early pioneer in the area. Milner sits just west of Barnesville, the Lamar County seat, and close to U.S. Route 41 and Georgia 36, which run through the county. Interstate 75 passes a short distance to the east, connecting the area to Atlanta to the north and Macon to the south. That position places Milner within commuting distance of both, while keeping its own pace distinctly small-town. The city is compact and largely residential, with a historic core and quiet streets that transition quickly into farms, pastures, and pine woods. Its residents describe a suburban-rural mix, with most homes owner-occupied and many families drawn to the area's affordability and space relative to the Atlanta suburbs an hour to the north. Public schools are part of the Lamar County School District, based in Barnesville, and the area's institutions—churches, community groups, and school events—anchor daily life. Nearby Barnesville adds a fuller downtown and the region's well-known Buggy Days heritage, while larger shopping and services are within a short drive. For homebuyers, Milner offers a low-key, historically rooted Georgia community with easy access to the interstate and the wider Middle Georgia region.
