Marble Country in the Blue Ridge

Apartments in Marble Hill, GA

A small North Georgia mountain community in Pickens County, named for the marble quarried here and gateway to the Big Canoe community.

Marble Hill is a small, unincorporated community in Pickens County, Georgia, set in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains roughly 60 miles north of Atlanta. The name is a direct reference to the resource that built the region: in the 1840s, an Irish stonecutter named Henry T. Fitzsimmons established the Long Swamp Marble works at the spot now known as Marble Hill, and Pickens County went on to become the "Marble Capital of Georgia." The nearby Georgia Marble Company quarries around Tate produced stone used in national landmarks including the U.S. Capitol and the statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial, and the industry's legacy remains central to the area's identity. Today Marble Hill is best known as the gateway to Big Canoe, a large, gated mountain community spanning about 7,660 forested acres in the Blue Ridge foothills. Big Canoe brings a 27-hole golf course, several lakes for fishing and boating, and more than 20 miles of hiking trails, and it has made the Marble Hill area a destination for full-time mountain residents, retirees, and Atlanta-area weekenders alike. The surrounding landscape — forested ridges, streams, and the long views from overlooks like Burnt Mountain — supports a quiet, outdoor-oriented way of life. The community is unincorporated and small in population, drawing its services from nearby Jasper, the Pickens County seat. Students attend Pickens County Schools. Transportation centers on Georgia Highway 53 and the network of mountain roads that connect Marble Hill to Jasper, Ellijay, and the wider North Georgia region, with Atlanta within roughly an hour's drive. The result is a rural mountain community whose history and modern appeal both trace back to the land itself.
